The Coaching Life Podcast Is Here: Episode 1 with Wayne Goldsmith - High Performance Coaching

Wayne Goldsmith thinks most performance leaders are solving the wrong problem. They're trying to get more OUT of people. Motivation sessions, resilience classes, offering incentives for buy-in, giving them self-help books for Christmas - that's the conventional approach to building high performance environments - let's be honest - none of it works - but we've all tried it - and usually when it's too late or almost too late. Thirty years across Olympic programs, national federations and professional organisations taught him it runs the other way. You can't force excellence. Greatness in organisations is grown from the bottom up - by connecting with, engaging and inspiring the people you work with. It's not about getting the best out of people - like you're squeezing the potential "juice" out of them! It's about giving your best to them - doing your best for them - by being selfless and by building on the foundation of three immensely important words: WE - NOT - ME! Coaching is the art of inspiring change through emotional connection - everything begins with powerful relationships focused on listening, caring, respect and empowerment. In this episode he makes the case for high-performance coaching as experience design - and what has to change on Monday morning for leaders who accept it.

What does it take to achieve high performance — and what can every coach learn from those who work at the highest level?

The first episode of the Coaching Life Podcast is out now, featuring internationally recognised high-performance coach Wayne Goldsmith.

Great coaching is about more than tactics, training programs or results. It is about people, performance, leadership and the ability to help others realise their potential.

That is why we are delighted to launch Episode 1 of the Coaching Life Podcast, featuring one of Australia's most respected figures in high-performance coaching: Wayne Goldsmith.

With decades of experience in sports performance, athlete development and coach education, Wayne brings a wealth of knowledge and practical insight to the coaching profession. His work challenges coaches to think differently about what it means to develop people, build performance and create lasting success.

And there is no better guest to help us launch this new series.

Why high-performance coaching matters

High performance is often associated with elite athletes, major competitions, podium finishes and winning teams. But the principles that underpin excellent coaching extend far beyond elite sport.

Whether you coach an Olympic athlete, lead a community sporting team, support people through personal change or help professionals achieve their goals, the fundamental challenge remains the same: how do you help people become the best they can be?

For coaches, that question requires more than technical knowledge. It calls for curiosity, adaptability, reflection and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Wayne Goldsmith's work in sports performance and coach development has long emphasised the importance of understanding the people behind the performance. His perspective offers an important reminder that coaching is not simply about what a coach knows, but how effectively that knowledge is applied to help others learn and improve.

Learning from experience

One of the most valuable opportunities available to any coach is the chance to learn from people who have spent years working at the highest levels of their profession.

The Coaching Life Podcast has been created to bring those conversations to a wider coaching community.

Through conversations with experienced coaches, thought leaders and practitioners, the series aims to explore the ideas, experiences and lessons that can help coaches strengthen their practice and continue developing their craft.

Wayne Goldsmith is an ideal guest to begin that journey. His experience in high-performance environments provides a valuable starting point for conversations about coaching excellence, athlete development and the ongoing pursuit of better performance.

For experienced coaches, the opportunity is to challenge established assumptions and continue evolving. For those beginning their coaching journey, it is a chance to learn from decades of practical experience.

And for every coach, it is an invitation to remain curious.

Coaching is a continuous learning journey

No matter how experienced we become, there is always more to learn.

The best coaches continue to reflect on their decisions, learn from the people they work with and look for opportunities to improve. They understand that coaching is not a destination reached through qualifications or years of experience. It is an ongoing commitment to becoming more effective.

At Coaching Life, we believe that sharing knowledge and connecting coaches across disciplines can help strengthen the profession as a whole.

That means making great coaching conversations accessible to coaches at every stage of their careers — from elite performance environments to community sport, business, life and specialist coaching.

The launch of our podcast is another step towards making that happen.
